Lessons learnt
I've been blogging for over 5 years. Initially it was impersonal, I'd
re-post news, then I found my voice, I speak to my readers, usually, I
'mind's-eye' one person who will enjoy reading the particular post.
Will at Weblog-ed has a cogent list of whys and wherefores of what he's learnt in his years of blogging. As does Anne at Edublog Insights and Nancy at Random Thoughts. There isn't much that they've left out, if anything. The three above examples are personal weblogs. A school website will, by necessity, be impersonal—a news page, leaving the comments and discussion group to mop up the emotions. But were a teacher to take a sub-site off that school site, then it couldn't help but be more personal, one cannot hide one's feelings and emotions, no matter how one writes. I think it's better to realise this ASAP. Then again, perhaps us British can bottle up our emotions ;-)
