Stranger danger
I saw a few minutes on ITV then a half hour on BBC's Panorama One Click from Danger (watch again) all about predators on the Internet.

Perhaps shamefully, I don't use IM chat. Nor do I have a webcam.

However, my daughter, 9, and son, 7, use Club Penguin. It's a virtual world, where they do chat. It's heavily moderated and now owned by Disney. My daughter knows how heavily moderated it is, she was banned for 24 hours, the reason isn't clear to me, but I guess she was being called names and responded... She lost her house which cost months of work and 5,000 gold coins.

She has used Habbo, where I have seen totally inappropriate stuff.

Two key technologies for both the predator and victim.

Two points came out of the program that made me want to comment.

IM is full of US predators. There's over half a million on the US xxx register. Half a million!
They really shouldn't have suggested that a child could strip for fifty quid.  It's true!

One other point that caught my attention was the anti-predator worker who instructs his teenagers, "IM is allowed, but from time to time I may POS (parent over shoulder) you and require you to state who the person is you are IMing with is. They must be some one you know, physically. Not a cousin of a cousin of a friend, or someone else you've never met."

Children won't tell you if they made a mistake, if they've been approached, because they think you, the parents, will stop them having more fun on-line, and predators will make it seem like it is their fault!
But it is important that they report the incident. The more reports, the more chance there is in catching these people, the more chance there is that a death will not happen or a rape or assault or xxxualised child.

A real abduction, that ended in an American 11 year old's murder and a death sentence.

However, remember that this is rare stuff. There are quite normal men out there. Me being one. Remember too, that you need to ingrain in young children's minds never ever give out personal details—this means in early primary school. If your school's site publishes its email address, your school's site sucks! Spambots will get it and you set a bad example about publishing personal details.
