Weekend updates in Word!
It's good to see that I'm not the only person who puts some time in on weekends. Though, I do try not to: only to check everything is running smoothly, see what's happening and sort any urgent problems. I look after my two children at the weekend and like to give them all of my time.

We've had two schools posting news to the front and one (Bodnant Infants) adding 33 pictures and two Word newsletters to their pending area. I guess she (Jemma) will finish them off today and post the to the front. I'll link to their St Davids Day celebrations, then.

The two to the front... Let's start with Waterloo in Tameside. First is a Word document about booster lessons. Written by website reporters from class 10 (??) Interesting that they're getting children to write in Word then post this to the website. I bet they're proud. Then there's an informative item about cubs, scouts and beavers.

Next is Great Whelnetham. And again they're using Word documents to update the site. Quite a bit of news in there, from IT to creationism; mini-beasts to custard.

I'm uneasy about using Word in this way, I have to say.
  • Sure, everybody is used to writing in Word, spell checking, adding pictures...
  • Sure, it's better than nothing and so simple to do: write it in Word and email the document to the site, job done.
  • Sure, parents can easily read the news with one click to pop it out into another window, even print it out. All without the need to own a copy of Word.
  • Sure, search engines find the real Word document and index it.
  • Sure, the customers are always right.
Perhaps it's because I'm a protoblogger. I like to blog: to add news to my sites, in plain old text, with pictures. Which is exactly what the above schools are doing, but not in HTML webpages. Maybe I'll get used to it. Maybe I should try it? Though I don't use Word very often... Maybe this is why I'm uneasy... It's the shock of the new!
